And the bubbles let the light in
And the swimming is relaxing,
So nobody feels like fighting
In the London Fields lido

The splish-it-up and splash-it-up
The Hackney mix and mash-it-up
The tattoo and moustache-it-up…
Lynn’s in her bikini
And Jonathan’s in his Speedos

Duncan is dunking his daughter in water
While Briony tries butterflies,
Baptised in the deep end

Belen and Raul drop their kids at the pool,
So the teachers from school bury heads
In their Guardian Weekends

The swimmers are a-hustling, bustling and tussling
Busting their corpuscles
As they’re flexing up their muscles
In the lido

There’s the girl who hula hoops
She’s rocking out a pink tutu
And there’s the guy who slips me suits –
I think his name is Grant –
or is Guido?

On a hot day, there’s queues outside the gate
And London Fields is full of people
Burning barbeques and practicing aikido

The lassie who caters bakes jacket potatoes
And now she’s learnt the art
Of making flat whites and cappuccino

Nobody likes a stereotype,
But look at all the fixie bikes
And mostly everybody’s white –
Except me though!

There’s mummies talking politics
And wees and ships
And bums and hips
And when they’re using words like ‘sick’ -
I’m not sure you’re getting what they mean, though
